Stanley Ip

Lots of cards were dealt against Stanley but diabetes took its toll on his kidneys. He says it is a game of chance and he accepts the odds.

Inherited diabetes showed up in his life 20 years ago, when he was in his 40s. It took years to realize that his kidneys were failing, at which point he started taking care of his health. But by then it was too late. Many people of Chinese origin are reluctant of treatments like dialysis, but in 2017 Stanley had to begin. “What’s come is come", he says.

He began the testing for a kidney transplant, when it was discovered that he needed triple by-pass heart surgery. That happened in September of 2018. Post heart surgery, Stanley experienced hallucinations and was hospitalized for 49 days. He forgot how to do his dialysis at home.

In August of 2019 Stanley received a successful kidney transplant from a deceased donor.

Stanley and his wife Joyce want to recognize the care they were given by all the medical staff at Vancouver General Hospital, not to mention all the support groups who bring awareness to the issue of kidney disease.

It takes an ocean to make a wave, and this wave is saving lives.
