Lucy Ryan
Approximately 15 years ago she decided that she was an extraordinarily healthy person with something to give back, and subconsciously knew then that someday she would give a kidney to someone less fortunate.
In December of 2015 she read a news story of a mother in need. She wanted the kidney not for herself, but to save herself hours of dialysis at the clinic, requiring time away from her son who was in palliative care in her home. Her son’s wish was to die at home with his family, as did his father, and not somewhere away. Lucy had a feeling that this was the right time and place, and began the assessment process to donate.
On April 18, 2016, she donated one of her kidneys to that person and fulfilled a mother’s wish to care for her son for the next year at home until his passing. Lucy ran a half marathon two weeks after her surgery, and completed a half Ironman competition 2 months later. She has since completed 15 Ironmans and trains 15 – 20 hours a week. You get the feeling that nothing can stop her now. Not that it ever did.
