Saul and Carol Zachs

When Saul emigrated from Mexico to Canada around 33 years ago, one requirement was a full physical examination.

Although he was already under a doctor’s care in Mexico over kidney concerns, the physical showed that his kidney function was very low. His problems had started at a young age, but since he had no symptoms there was never any emergency. But his new doctor in Canada helped him stabilize his condition through diet and other measures, and the disease progressed very slowly over the next 29 or so years until 2015.

That year he suffered a heart attack and the associated treatments finished off his kidneys. He needed a transplant, and thanks to his close-knit family, his beautiful daughter Carol offered to give him one of hers. One year ago, on December 3, 2018, he proudly received the greatest gift she was able to give him.

Today, both father and daughter are here to help spread the word that kidney donation is safe. That donors can live fully healthy lives afterwards and life for recipients can return to normal. Saul feels ten years younger and can finally babysit his three grandchildren. He has also taken up making wooden boats!
