Photos For Kidneys

Wayde Hayley

Wayde knows the darkest days on dialysis can be plentiful, when attitude is your only weapon.

After his kidneys failed in 2011, due to IgA nephropathy, he functioned for the better part of 3 years on both peritoneal and hemodialysis, in the meantime continuing to work and travel between Canada and the US. He recognized the importance of mental health and of continuing to live a life as close to normal as possible, but it was not always easy. In 2014 he experienced a significant health event while doing hemodialysis at home, and thankfully his 20-year old son was there to call 911. Gaining consciousness days later and not being able to recall the names of his children, was one of the toughest days.

In 2014 Wayde received a kidney transplant from his cousin, and he is very grateful to be here, to share his story and to help others.

He understands what it is like to be in a hemodialysis ward, and the physical demands of dialysis. He also knows how difficult it is to not only ask for help, but to receive it.

Wayde is a member of the Board of Directors of the Kidney Foundation BC, Yukon Branch. He is photographed here with his partner Jennifer Brandon, at the 8th Annual Kidney Foundation Gala.
